What If You Have a Dental Emergency While on Vacation?
If you’ve done your research and booked cheap tickets for your dream destination, you don’t want a dental emergency to spoil your plans. Here’s some advice on dealing with dental emergencies on vacation.
1. Don’t put off dental care before your trip. An infected tooth is the most common dental emergency, but they usually don’t occur overnight. If you have pain or discomfort in a tooth, go to the dentist and deal with it before your trip.
2. For tooth or gum pain, use an over-the-counter pain reliever. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. For swelling, use a cold compress on the outside of your mouth or the side of your face. Never put aspirin directly against the gum or tooth. It can burn mouth tissues. If possible call your dentist back home and see if he or she can prescribe something for pick-up at a nearby pharmacy.
3. For a broken tooth, soft wax (used by people with braces) can cover sharp edges until you can have it looked at. Save any pieces you can find of a broken tooth. Rinse the mouth and tooth pieces with warm water. If your mouth is bleeding, gently press a piece of gauze to the source of the bleeding for ten minutes or so. Use a cold compress on your face near the broken tooth to minimize swelling.
4. If a tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown and rinse off the root, but do not scrub it or remove tissue fragments. Try to gently put the tooth back in place, but never force it into the socket. If you can’t get it back in, put the tooth in a cup of milk or mild saltwater solution. Find a dentist as soon as possible to maximize the chances for reattaching the tooth. Your hotel front desk or concierge can usually help you find a local dentist.
Snacking in the Car? What It’s Really Doing to Your Teeth
Snacks in the car are a staple of the American family road trip. Commuters snack in the car too. Sometimes grabbing a Danish and a cup of coffee on the way out the door in the morning is all you have time for. Occasional snacking while riding or driving isn’t going to ruin your teeth (or your waistline). But if it becomes a habit, behind-the-wheel snacking can wreak havoc on your dental health. Also keep in mind that practices like drinking hot coffee while driving can make you more prone to accidents and ultimately raise your car insurance rates. It’s hard to drive optimally when you’ve scorched your lap.
Some snacks are much harder on the teeth than others. You may think that relatively healthy snacks like raisins are easier on teeth than, say, a cookie. But raisins are sticky, and the longer foods stick to teeth, the more the chances that decay-causing acid can build up.
Some of the worst foods for your teeth happen to be the most convenient for in-car snacking: soda, candy, chips, dried fruits, and bread. You can benefit your teeth by choosing car snacks wisely. Try apples, water, milk, and cheese. These are lower in sugar, and drinking water helps rinse food particles from your mouth.
Ideally, you should brush your teeth after meals and snacks, but most of us don’t live in the ideal world. If you can rinse your mouth out with water, that’s better than nothing, as is chewing sugarless gum after a meal or snack (because gum can un-stick some food particles from teeth). Most people aren’t going to give up snacking in the car altogether, but you can make it much easier on your teeth if you take care in choosing your snacks.

Tooth formation
Odontogenesis call the process by which embryonic cells of the primitive mouth stomodeum or differentiate to give rise to teeth.
The life cycle of dental organs involves a series of chemical changes, morphological and functional starting at the sixth week of intrauterine life (forty-five days or so of pregnancy) and continues throughout the life of the tooth.
The process involves several steps or stages, a total of five. The first phase is called laminar. We follow four phases teeth (bud stage, cap stage, bell stage and mature stage).
The lamellar phase coincides with the differentiation of cells of the dental plates from the ectoderm of stomodeum. These will form dental plates or dental bud primordia. From here the future teeth go through different stages of differentiation.
The shoot or bud stage is the emergence of ten thickened at each dental lamina (future dental arch) which are the primitive stages of deciduous teeth. First are the ten or lower jaw. At the end of week 8 intrauterine already completed the process of the top ten or jaws.
The cap stage coincides with the modeling of future tooth crown cap takes the form of that in this phase. From the buds will differentiate the enamel organ in the outer layer of the cap and inside the disc begins to differentiate leading to dental pulp and dentin.
Around the cap forms called dental sac, future cement and periodontal ligament of the tooth.
At the end of this stage we can introduce the term or set of tooth germ enamel, dental papilla and dental sac.
The bell stage is characterized by the differentiation of cells which will lead to enamel and dentin.
Around week 10 of intrauterine life deciduous teeth are being bell and permanent teeth bud stage.
The formation of the tooth reaches its final phase coinciding with the eruption is the formation of the root of it.
It would be interesting to introduce and differentiate the concepts of eruption and exfoliation.
We call the migration process eruption suffered by the tooth from its site of formation (inside the bone) to its position in the oral cavity. Understand the concept of emergency or time point in the tooth erupts through the gum and can be seen already in the oral cavity.
The concept of exfoliation refers to the teeth and refers to the physiological loss of the same after completion of its function. This is preceded by physiological root resorption. This space is gradually being occupied by the permanent tooth that will eventually occupy the space of the tooth exfoliated.
The root of the permanent tooth is not fully formed until after 24 months of its eruption.
The deciduous dentition is usually complete in children between 2.5 and 3 years and has 20 teeth, 10 in each jaw (2 central incisors, 2 lateral incisors, 2 canines, 2 first molars and molars 2 seconds).

As the ancient Chinese medicine and Japanese argued that the consumption of this tea could cure diseases and heal wounds, recent studies have begun to establish potential health benefits of green tea consumption, especially in weight loss, heart health and cancer prevention.
Now a study published in the Journal of Periodontology, has discovered another benefit of green tea consumption.
