The truth about cholesterol and egg yolks

People have been misled by doctors for years on issues related to cholesterol. One of the primary scapegoat becomes the egg yolk. The center of gold is not the demon of cholesterol that medical science says it is.

The healthcare industry in general is in its conviction that the cholesterol content in egg yolk is too high for people to consume on a daily basis, without creating significant health risks over time. Cholesterol can be stored on the inside of the arteries and some studies have suggested that this may be a response of the body to protect the artery walls. Whatever the reason, the excess cholesterol is mainly a problem when there is a constriction of the pressure of blood flow and therefore blood.

Cholesterol has also been linked by folk medicine for the general deterioration of the blood vessel walls, contributing to strokes and heart disease. Note that high cholesterol is not a disease itself but rather a condition that health professionals have been linked to heart disease

It is true that when comparing the egg yolks to other foods that are relatively high in cholesterol, like egg contains on average between 190 and 215 mg. Cholesterol is something that many people should care, but not as much as in the case of eggs. Studies have shown that eating eggs regularly may actually decrease low-density lipids (bad cholesterol) and increase high-density lipids.

The dangers of a diet high in cholesterol may also have been exaggerated in the media, as some studies have shown that people who maintain a low cholesterol diet can still have high cholesterol levels. This is because cholesterol actually plays several important roles in the body, they do not get enough, makes his own. In fact, the liver produces about two thirds of the cholesterol your body’s food intake with very little impact on overall levels. The benefits of cholesterol, especially from a natural source such as an egg yolk, are greatly exaggerated its risks.

Limit the intake of dietary cholesterol is important, but the real danger comes from saturated fats and trans fats. These two are the biggest factors in the increase in cholesterol than any normal intake of egg yolks. It makes little sense to separate the egg yolks to avoid cholesterol while eating fatty fried foods, pizza and other junk in a normal Western diet. Lean meats like fish and chicken breast are a much more preferred among the health conscious. Even compared to these sources of protein, the yolk contains a nutrition and higher proportion of fat content. An egg yolk, although it may have a slightly higher content of fat and cholesterol, for example, steamed cod, also has more content in vitamins and fatty acids.

Safe Driving and the Older Generation

There are tons of stereotypes out there associated with what type of person is a good driver and what type of person is a bad driver. Some say that doctors and dentists are typically great drivers, while women as a gender aren’t all that great. And then there’s the ever-present stereotype that older drivers are the least safe of them all. So what’s the truth? Are older drivers safe, or are they as dangerous as the stereotype deems them?

A report released by the United Kingdom’s Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) contradicts this stereotype, actually proving that drivers over the age of seventy are no more likely to cause car accidents than any other aged driver. In fact, the report proved that older drivers are much safer than younger drivers between the ages of sixteen and nineteen, who were shown to cause the highest amount of accidents.

However, the report did show that with age typically comes a decline in specific physical and mental abilities, which can lead older drivers to be more apt to be involved in particular types of wrecks. IAM’s Director of Policy and Research, Neil Greig, said that the instituted “recommends that, rather than seeking to prevent older people from driving, we need to make them aware of the risks they face, and offer them driving assessments to help them cope with these risks.”

Some of these risks include poorer vision, decreased night vision, and increased risk of the misuse of medications.

How do you feel about the older generation and their driving skills? Do you agree with the report that IAM released?

Top Reasons You Should Get Dental Insurance

There are some types of insurance that you know you shouldn’t go without: health insurance, car insurance, life insurance, etc. But then there are some types that you may not be so sure about, such as dental insurance. Following are some reasons why you should jump on the dental insurance train by getting some online insurance quotes as soon as you can.

  • To help pay for dental expenses, of course

This is the number one reason that you should get dental insurance. Without it, you’ll have to shoulder the entire cost of teeth cleanings and any other dental work that you end up having to get done. All dental insurance policies are different; some will pay for the entire costs while others will just help with the expenses. But either way, having dental insurance is better than being uninsured when you need to have work done. Think about this: even a simple procedure such as tooth extraction can cost hundreds of dollars. That’s quite a bit to have to come completely out of your wallet (if you’re uninsured).

  • Help prevent future dental issues

When you’re covered by dental insurance, you can take advantage of all of those preventative measures that help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. This includes x-rays, dental cleaning, regular check-ups, and other preventative dental procedures.

And if that’s not enough to motivate you to go ahead and get some dental insurance quotes, know that holding out and getting dental insurance when you need it could actually be worse. This is because there’s a probationary period, which means that for a specific amount of time after you first become insured, your insurer won’t cover major work such as root canals. And for a shorter period of time after first becoming insured, you won’t be able to count on your insurance for minor work, either.

So what are you waiting for? Don’t you think it’s time to get dental insurance?

Can You Recycle Your Rainwater?

Recycling rainwater is a terrific way to supplement your summer irrigation system at a low cost. Not only does recycled rainwater lessen your dependence upon municipal water systems to water your garden, it also helps reduce storm water runoff. While large and complex rainwater harvesting systems exist, many people do fine with a 50-gallon food grade barrel that costs less than $20. Choose a barrel made of heavy grade plastic that is opaque, because translucent or clear containers enhance algae growth, and algae will clog the pipes leading from the barrel.

You can often use a curved downspout extension to direct water from your gutters right into the barrel. Make sure that the top of the barrel has a screen over it to prevent leaves, dirt, and twigs from entering the barrel. It is equally important to keep your gutters clean. Gutters clogged with debris are inefficient and will cause rainwater to go places you don’t want it, like around your house’s foundation. If you hate cleaning gutters, consider installing gutter guards to cut down on this tiresome chore.

If you’re making a DIY barrel, you can install a 3/4-inch hose spigot a few inches from the barrel bottom. Having a few inches of space under the spigot makes it easier to connect a hose, and keeps the hose above any debris that settles to the bottom of the barrel. You can make a simple stable platform for your rain barrel using concrete cinder blocks.

The rainwater you collect can be put to many uses. You can remove the pressure-reducing washer from a soaker hose and connect it to your rain barrel to slowly water garden areas. Rain barrels are perfect for filling watering cans and rinsing your garden tools at the end of the day. Recycling rain water is a thrifty and earth friendly way to keep your lawn and garden healthy during the summer.
